CHICAGO : EXPLORE THE WINDY CITY AND EXPERIENCE

THREE FRENCH OPERAS

OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 5, 2008

Come along to the Windy City , the gangster city, the butcher city, the city of skyscrapers! Experience three French operas, dine on huge steaks and pan pizza, shop along the Miracle Mile, do the gangster tour!

Chicago may look like a hard, cold, shimmering pearl on the shores of Lake Michigan but under the surface it is teeming with excitement. It is a brash and jazzy city, old and new at the same time, built mostly after the big fire of 1871.

In the early 1900's it was considered the second largest Swedish city with its population of about 100 000 Swedish immigrants. Many of them were skilled craftsmen and many made a name for themselves as builders and entrepreneurs, like Andrew Landquist who built one of the first skyscrapers in Chicago , the Monon building, in 1891. Chicago brags about being the birthplace of many famous people, like Ernest Hemingway, Gloria Swanson, Carl Sandburg, as well as the place where the infamous gangster Al Capone was killed on Valentine's Day in 1929. Chicago is known for its many great jazz clubs, but is also home to one the world's greatest symphony orchestras, the CSO, and an excellent opera house, the Chicago Lyric Opera. We have choice seats for a concert version of Berlioz' opera LA DAMNATION DE FAUST with the CSO, and for the scenic productions of Massenet's MANON and Bizet's THE PEARL FISHERS at the Chicago Lyric Opera. Our musical guide is Johan Molander from the Royal Opera of Stockholm.

Wednesday, October 29 STOCKHOLM/COPENHAGEN – CHICAGO

We travel with SAS from Arlanda or Kastrup to Chicago 's O'Hare airport. A coach will take us to downtown Chicago and our luxury hotel, the famous Drake Hotel, excellently located at East Walton Place right on the Gold Coast. After checking into our comfortable rooms, we gather in the hotel bar for a welcome cocktail and a briefing about the activities to come.

Thursday, October 30 CHICAGO RIVER

This morning we dress warmly and catch a boat going up the Chicago River on a much appreciated tour of Chicago 's many architectural sites, arranged by the Chicago Architectural Foundation. Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper and has always been a major arena for many famous architects, e.g. Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. After the boat tour we have lunch together in a nice restaurant. The rest of the afternoon you are on your own. You may want to do some shopping along the Miracle Mile, where you will find all the great department stores, Nordstrom's, Lord & Taylor, Carson Pirie Scott and Macy's (which used to be Chicago's most well-known store, Marshall Field & Co). In the evening we are going to the Symphony Center on Michigan Avenue to listen to a concert version of LA DAMNATION DE FAUST by Hector Berlioz, performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the singers Suzanne Mentzer, Gregory Kunde, David Wilson-Johnson, and Jonathan Lemalu. The conductor is Charles Dutoit.

Friday, October 31 HALLOWEEN IN CHICAGO

Watch out for jack o'lanterns, ghouls and treat-or-tricksters! Today is Halloween. We start the day with a refreshing walking tour around the inner city. We will see some of the historical skyscrapers and many fabulous buildings, like the Rookery, built in 1888 with a Moorish revival façade and an interior that was restored by the great Frank Lloyd Wright. We will also pass by the Chicago Board of Trade Building, an Art Deco dream from 1930 that houses the biggest grain exchange in the world. This very interesting tour is also arranged by the Architectural Foundation and demands comfy shoes. For anyone with Scandinavian ancestry in the Chicago area, the Swedish-American Museum in Andersonville provides great opportunities for digging into their immigration archives. At 7.30 p.m. the curtain rises for Jules Massenet's MANON at the Chicago Lyric Opera. The production was originally mounted for the English National Opera and features the French soprano Natalie Dessay and the German tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

Saturday, November 1 THE GANGSTER TOUR, CHICAGO

The criminally minded may this morning do the Gangster Tour. In a couple of hours you will find out more about Al Capone and his mob than you probably wanted to know, but it is all done with tongue in cheek and great fun. Those partial to more refined experiences may spend the day at the Chicago Art Institute, a renowned art school as well as a most impressive art museum with a collection of some 300 000 pieces. Here you will find all the great American artists, such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, as well as artists from Europe and other parts of the world. During our visit there is an exhibition of photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson and another exhibit titled “The Divine Art: Four Centuries of European Tapestries”. The museum is located on Michigan Avenue and houses several excellent restaurants and coffee shops.

At 7.30 p.m. we are back in our seats at the Chicago Lyric Opera for a production of Georges Bizet's LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES from 1863. We will hear Nathan Gunn and Eric Cutler as the two pearl fishermen who fall in love with the priestess Leila, sung by Nicole Cabell.

Sunday, November 2 CHICAGO

Today you do your own exploring of Chicago , be it Sunday shopping or a walk around the bay of Lake Michigan where the Chicagoans do their jogging and from where you have the most spectacular view of thecity's skyline. You may want to spend a few afternoon hours nursing a drink in the sky bar at Sear's Tower or at the Hancock Observatory. In the evening you may just want to go out for a leisurely dinner or you could check out the theater scene. The Second City Theater saw the light of day in Chicago in 1959 and has since brought us terrific comedians such as John Belushi, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and Mike Myers. The new comedy generation works from two stages, the Mainstage and e.t.c. Another entertaining show is that of The Blue Man Group on Briar Street . Three blue-painted mimes have pleased crowds for decades and are reportedly still going strong.

Monday, November 3 CHICAGO

If your appetite for awesome Chicago architecture and exciting history is not yet satisfied, the ArchitecturalFoundations provides several more bus tours. For instance the one that leaves the Santa Fe Building on Michigan Avenue at 9.30 a .m. and will take you around the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast and many more historical sites, as well as make stops at the Mies van der Rohe campus at ITT and at the Robie House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

In the evening we gather for our farewell dinner and to say “so long” to each other and the great city of Chicago .

Tuesday, November 4 RETURN TRIP

You may be able to get in some last minute shopping or other activity in the morning. Check-out time from the hotel is noon and the bus for the airport leaves at 1 p.m. Direct SAS flights take us back to Stockholmand Copenhagen .

CRUISE THE CARIBBEAN WITH S/S SEA CLOUD II

FROM BARBADOS TO ANTIGUA

MARCH 20-30, 2009

Friday, March 20

We arrive by air in Barbados and board the Sea Cloud II in Bridgetown . Before we set out for the next island on our tour, we have time to familiarize ourselves with the beautiful sailing ship, built in 2001, a replica of an ancient windjammer but with the elegant ambiance and full facilities of a modern cruise ship. At dinner we get the first opportunity of many to sample the exquisite cuisine on board. We sail at 10 p.m.

Saturday, March 21

The early bird gets a reward: the true wonder of nature, sunrise at sea. If you miss it the first morning, there will be several more opportunities. What you should not miss, is the basic lecture on sailing given at the beginning of each voyage. This information will make the setting of sails a much more interesting and spectacular event. The rest of the day may be spent in a deck chair, getting used to the laid-back life of the week to come, only interrupted by scrumptious meals, tea with cake, glorious rum drinks, or whatever your heart desires.

At 6 p.m. we drop anchor off Canouan, a small island that is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines .

Sunday, March 22

Canouan is a peaceful island, only 3.5 miles long and 1.25 miles wide, a favorite among wealthy tourists who can afford to stay at the Raffles Resort Hotel that takes up a good part of the island. Swimming and diving are popular activities on Canouan. We sail again at 4 p.m. in order to arrive at St. Elizabeth on Bequia around dinnertime.

Monday, March 23

Bequia (pronounced beck-way) is the northernmost of the Grenadine islands, about 6 miles long and with a population of about 6 000. Columbus is said to have landed here on one of his exploratory trips. In 1675 a Dutch slave ship is said to have been ship-wrecked nearby. Ancestors of the Africans that escaped, the Garifuna or the Black Carib, still live here. In 1979 St . Vincent and the Grenadines gained their independence within the British Commonwealth . In Port Elizabeth sailors gather before they set sails for some of the smaller islands, like Mustique, famous as Princess Margaret's retreat. Port Elizabeth prides itself of a whale museum and a turtle farm, which may be fun to visit. Fortunately you will not encounter any genuine pirates any longer, but for the movie buff it may be interesting to know that the Johnny Depp film “Pirates of the Caribbean ” was shot here.

At 7 p.m. we lift anchor.

Tuesday, March 24

At 8 a .m. we drop anchor outside Rodney Bay on the island of St. Lucia . Lots of pirates and other ancient mariners used to hang around Rodney Bay . Today it is a favorite harbor for extravagant yachts. While we enjoy our luncheon aboard, the Sea Cloud II sails along the coast of St. Lucia , passing the two volcanic peaks Gros Piton and Petit Piton. At 2.30 p.m. we arrive at Soufrière, from where we set out on an excursion to the sulphur springs and the botanical garden. Small but beautiful and fertile, the island of St. Lucia has attracted colonial powers since the 16 th century. It changed hands between the French and the British 14 times, before it finally gained independence in 1979. St . Lucia grows mainly bananas, citrus and coconuts. In 1992 the island produced a Nobel Prize winner in literature, Derek Walcott, poet and playwright, born in 1930 in the capital of Castries .

At 7 p.m. we set out for the next island.

Wednesday, March 25

Around breakfast time we arrive at Fort-de-France on Martinique . This island is one of France 's overseas regions and therefore uses the Euro as currency. The official language is French, but many of the half million people who live here, speak créole as well. Some of the famous people born in Martinique were Joséphine, wife of Napoléon, and the author Aimé Césaire, who coined the literary and political expression of blackness, négritude. The landscape of Martinique is very varied, from volcanic mountains and paradisiacal sandy beaches to tropical rain forest and great plains of sugar cane crops. Right outside Fort-de-France is the botanical garden Balata which we will visit in order to admire some of its 3 000 different plants.

At 6 p.m. we lift anchor.

Thursday, March 26

You may spend the entire day enjoying a book and some refreshments in your deck chair, watching the skilled crew of the Sea Cloud II do their sailing chores.

Friday, March 27

Early in the morning we drop anchor off Îles des Saintes, one of the five islands of Guadeloupe . These islands have also been fought over by the British and the French (and actually also by the Swedes), but in 1814 the British transferred the rule to the French. Guadeloupe has not only grand scenery but also made its mark in art, literature, the performing arts, and fashion. We will spend half a day on Les Saintes – the spectacular view from Fort Napoléon or the golden beach of Plage Pompierre can be recommended.

We sail again at 1.30 p.m.

Saturday, March 28

At 8 a .m. we arrive in Gustavia on the island of St. Barthélemy . The island was named after Christopher Columbus brother Bartolomeo, when Columbus discovered it in 1492. The city was named after King Gustav III of Sweden , who took over the island from the French in 1784, with the intention of starting a profitable slave trade. About 100 years later, King Oscar II of Sweden , needed money and sold St. Barths back to the French. All the Swedes left behind are some street names and possibly a few blondish ancestors. Since 2007 St . Barths has its independence as one of France 's overseas regions. In the island's coat of arms and its flag, you may still see the symbols of its past: the French lilies, the Swedish crowns and the Maltese cross. The main source of income in St. Barths is tourism and celebrity spotting is very good in the chic boutiques of Gustavia.

At midnight we lift anchor.

Sunday, March 29

We arrive at St. Kitts & Nevis at 8 a .m. and drop anchor off the main town of Basseterre . The 40 000 or so inhabitants of this small group of islands are part of the British Commonwealth . We make an excursion to what was once a formidable fortress, Brimstone Hill. With some 400 ships anchored below, the view from up here is truly amazing. At 4 p.m. we set sail for the last leg of our trip.

Monday, March 30

Early in the morning we arrive at St. John's on Antigua , our last harbor on this voyage. Antigua & Barbuda are part of the Small Antilles which were colonized by the British in 1667 and gained independence under the British crown in 1981. It is time to say good-bye to the Sea Cloud II and her crew and start our individual trips home.
